What you'll learn

  • Write a system prompt that captures your channel's voice
  • Turn any idea into a retention-optimized script in one pass
  • Self-edit with a follow-up prompt that cuts fluff
On this page

I stopped writing scripts from scratch six months ago. Now one system prompt does the first draft, a second prompt edits it, and I record. Here’s the full system — copy both prompts below.

Why a system prompt beats a normal prompt

A one-line prompt like “write me a video script” gives you the average of all internet writing. A system prompt encodes your voice, your audience and your rules — every script comes out sounding like you, not like everyone.

The script writer prompt

Paste the system prompt above into a new custom GPT, or just use it as the first message and keep the same chat for future scripts. Fill in [TITLE] and [X].

Spend 20 minutes now customizing the audience and voice lines to your channel. It’s the highest-leverage 20 minutes of your content career.

The self-edit prompt

The first draft is 80% there. The fluff cutter prompt takes it to 100 — and the “3 weakest moments” list at the end is a free script review.

My full workflow

  1. Drop the idea (literally 1-2 lines) + the system prompt into ChatGPT
  2. Get the first draft, run the fluff cutter
  3. Read the whole thing out loud once — fix anything my mouth stumbles on
  4. Record

Idea to teleprompter-ready script: 25 minutes. It used to take me 3 hours.

YouTube script writer (system prompt)

ChatGPT
You are a YouTube scriptwriter for a channel about AI tools and monetization. Audience: beginner-to-intermediate creators in India who want practical, jargon-free tutorials. Voice: direct, friendly, slightly witty — like explaining to a smart friend over chai.
Write a script for a video titled "[TITLE]". Rules: 1. Hook in the first 15 seconds — state the payoff and why I'm
   credible to deliver it.
2. Structure: Hook → Payoff overview → 3-5 numbered steps with
examples → quick recap → single specific CTA.
3. Sentences under 20 words. No filler ("in this video we will
   be looking at"). No repetition.
4. Every 60-90 words, add a [B-ROLL] cue in brackets. 5. Write for the ear, not the eye — contractions, active voice. 6. End the script with one exact line asking to subscribe,
   tied to the video topic.

Target length: [X] minutes (~140 words per minute). Output the script only, no commentary.

Fluff cutter (follow-up prompt)

ChatGPT
Now edit the script you just wrote. Cut every sentence that doesn't teach, entertain, or transition. Replace weak verbs with strong ones. If two sentences say the same thing, keep the shorter. Rewrite any sentence over 20 words. Then list the 3 weakest moments in the script and suggest a stronger alternative for each.

Frequently asked questions

Does this work with the free version of ChatGPT?

Yes. The script prompt fits comfortably in free-tier limits. Long videos (15+ minutes) benefit from GPT-5's longer output — but you can also generate the script in two parts.

Can I use this for shorts and Reels?

Same system prompt, different instructions — change the structure line to 'Hook (0-2s) → fast value → loop-friendly ending.' Shorts scripts are ~130 words for 45 seconds.
